Pure Velvet Collective: Exploring the Artistic Journey of Albert Tang and Ashleigh Chiang

In the vibrant world of music and creativity, two artists, Albert Tang and Ashleigh Chiang from the Pure Velvet Collective, are redefining the boundaries of artistic expression. Their journey is a fascinating tapestry woven with threads of diversity, equity, inclusion, and individuality.

Ashleigh Chiang

Roots and Inspirations

Albert Tang, a Vietnamese-Cantonese American, and Ashleigh Chiang, a Taiwanese-Filipino American, are both Music Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (MBET) students, set to graduate in Fall 2023. Their distinct backgrounds converge on a shared love for music.

Albert's passion for music was kindled in childhood, "I started out by banging chopsticks on the dinner table, which made me realize my love for playing the drums." This early fascination evolved into a career in songwriting and music production.

Ashleigh's musical journey began in solitude, "I didn't come from a family of musicians... learning guitar and writing songs was my personal haven, which eventually blossomed into my passion and career."

Philadelphia, a city steeped in history and culture, has played a pivotal role in their artistic development. Albert fondly remembers family trips to South Philly and Chinatown, "The vibrant culture and environment of the city really stuck with me."

For Ashleigh, Philadelphia offered a unique canvas for self-expression, different from her parents' New York roots, "It's energetic and underdog-like vibe... inspires the way I express myself and create art."

Embracing Challenges as Growth Opportunities

Both artists view challenges as essential milestones. Albert discusses his struggle with time management, while Ashleigh speaks of the anxieties of embarking on a career post-graduation.

Albert believes that "Challenges are necessary for finding your way in life," and Ashleigh echoes this sentiment, "They're hard but necessary... the only way to become better at anything in life."

Their artistry, described by Albert as "Emotional, Ambiguous, & Exciting," and by Ashleigh as "Spontaneous, eclectic, & fun," mirrors their diverse experiences and identities.

Albert shares his journey towards embracing his heritage, "I've recently started to embrace my culture and identity more confidently." Ashleigh, resonating with multiple communities, emphasizes, "Creating a project that represents people of color was significant for both me and Albert."

Albert Tang and Ashleigh Chiang, through their dedication to music and creativity, epitomize the essence of diversity and inclusion in the arts.
